Water intake calculator

The calculator follows a common rule of thumb: roughly 35 millilitres of fluid per kilogram of body weight a day, plus about a third of a litre for every half hour of exercise — a starting point rather than a requirement.

How much water should I drink a day?

The rule of thumb is about 35 ml per kilogram of body weight: for a 70 kg person that is roughly 2.5 litres a day, part of which arrives with food, since soup, fruit and vegetables hold a lot of water. Heat, fever and long training raise the need; a cool office day lowers it.

Do coffee and tea count?

They do — fluid is fluid, and coffee or tea in ordinary amounts does not leave you short. Juices and soft drinks bring sugar along with the water, while alcohol increases fluid loss. Very large amounts of water in a short time are not harmless either, since they dilute the sodium in the blood.
