Body fat calculator

The US Navy circumference method estimates body fat from height together with neck, waist and — for women — hip measurements, which makes it an estimate to the accuracy of a tape measure rather than a direct laboratory reading.

Basis of the calculation

This uses the US Navy circumference method. It is an estimate whose accuracy depends on measurement precision — measure relaxed and consistently at the same points.

Where exactly do I measure?

Measure the neck just below the larynx, with the tape sloping slightly forward. Measure the waist at navel height for men and at the narrowest point for women, and the hips at the widest part of the buttocks. Measure on bare skin, at the end of an exhale, without pulling the tape tight.

How accurate is the circumference method?

It is an estimate whose largest error comes from the measuring itself: the same person gets a different figure on a different day if the tape sits differently. The method cannot separate visceral from subcutaneous fat. One reading says little — the direction of consistently taken readings over months says more.
