Roman numeral converter
Roman numerals use seven symbols read left to right and added together — except when a smaller symbol precedes a larger one, in which case it is subtracted. That is how IV is four and VI is six.

How do I read Roman numerals?
Read the symbols left to right and add their values; when a smaller symbol precedes a larger one, subtract it. MMXXVI is 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 2026, while XIV is 10 + (5 − 1) = 14. Only I, X and C are used subtractively.
Why isn't four written IIII?
Because a symbol may repeat at most three times in a row, and the fourth repetition becomes a subtraction: IV. The same applies to nine, written IX rather than VIIII. Clock faces are the exception, where IIII survives by tradition for symmetry.
