How do I work out a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by one hundred: 20% of 250 is 250 × 20 / 100 = 50. In your head, find 10% first (shift the decimal one place) and adjust: 10% is 25, so 20% is 50 and 5% is 12.5.
How do I find what percentage one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by one hundred: 45 people out of 180 is 45 / 180 × 100 = 25%. Order matters — the part is always divided by the whole. An answer over one hundred percent means the part exceeds the whole, which is perfectly possible: 240 is 120% of 200.
What is the difference between a percent and a percentage point?
When a rate rises from 2% to 3%, the rise is one percentage point but 50 percent — because 3 is half again as much as 2. A percentage point compares two percentages absolutely; a percent, relatively. News reports mix them up constantly, and the difference can be manyfold.
