Average calculator

The arithmetic mean is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are; the median is the middle value once they are sorted. The more uneven the distribution, the further apart they sit — for salaries the median is usually the fairer figure.

What is the difference between the mean and the median?

The mean adds everything and divides; the median takes the middle of the sorted list. For 1, 2, 3, 4, 100 the mean is 22 but the median is 3. One extreme value drags the mean with it and leaves the median alone — which is why salary statistics prefer the median.

What does standard deviation show?

It measures how far the numbers spread around the mean. A small deviation means the values cluster; a large one means they scatter. Two datasets can share a mean and look nothing alike, and the standard deviation is what makes that difference visible.

Can I enter decimals with a comma?

Yes. The calculator reads decimals written with a comma, as Estonian does, as well as with a point, and accepts commas, spaces or line breaks as separators. A column copied from a spreadsheet can be pasted in unchanged.
