Data size converter
Data is measured in two systems with nearly identical names: decimally a megabyte is a million bytes, in binary a mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes — and that gap is why a 1 TB drive shows up smaller on a computer.

Why does a 1 TB drive show less on a computer?
Manufacturers sell drives in decimal units, where 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, while Windows reports capacity in binary units but still labels them "GB". The same drive is 1000 decimal gigabytes or 931 binary ones — nothing is missing, the name simply carries two meanings.
What is the difference between a bit and a byte?
A byte is eight bits. Internet speed is measured in bits per second (Mbit/s) and file sizes in bytes (MB), so a 100 Mbit/s connection downloads about 12.5 MB each second. That factor of eight is why an advertised speed feels slower when a file is downloading.
