Temperature converter
Temperature scales differ not only in step size but in where they start: converting to Fahrenheit needs both a multiplication and an addition, while Kelvin is offset from Celsius by exactly 273.15 degrees.
- Celsius (°C)
- 20
- Kelvin (K)
- 293.15
Rates and thresholds
- °C → °F
- °C × 9/5 + 32
- °F → °C
- (°F − 32) × 5/9
- °C → K
- °C + 273.15
- 0 °C · 20 °C · 100 °C
- 32 °F · 68 °F · 212 °F
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?
Subtract 32 and multiply by five ninths. 100 °F is (100 − 32) × 5/9 = 37.8 °C. For a mental estimate, subtract 30 and halve it — that gives 35 rather than 37.8, right to within a couple of degrees.
At what temperature do Celsius and Fahrenheit meet?
At minus forty: −40 °C is exactly −40 °F. It is the only point where the two scales give the same number, which makes it a useful check — if a conversion does not agree at −40, the formula has been written down wrong.
