How do you extract 24% VAT from a price?
Multiply the gross price by 24 and divide by 124 — that is the VAT. For the net price, divide the gross by 1.24. A €100 gross price contains €19.35 of VAT and is €80.65 before tax.
Why isn't taking 24% off the same as adding 24% on?
Because the percentage is taken from different bases. Adding charges 24 per cent of the net price; extracting looks for the same tax inside a price that already contains it — a smaller share of a larger number. A €100 net price gains €24.00 of VAT, but a €100 gross price contains only €19.35.
